Background mode shines on the jobs that actually take time: 200-page documents, 200 MB scans, batch runs of 10 files. Premium tasks also skip the line — they are processed by a dedicated priority queue, so they start immediately instead of waiting behind free-tier jobs.

How it works

  1. 1 Start a conversion on any supported tool — big files and batch runs are processed on our servers, not in your browser.
  2. 2 While the job is running, click “Continue in background”. The page unlocks instantly and you can keep working, open other tools, or leave the site.
  3. 3 Follow progress from any page: the queue indicator in the header shows active, finished and failed tasks, and the Background Queue Center lists them in detail.
  4. 4 Download the result with one click as soon as it is ready — you also get an on-site notification when a task finishes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I close the tab or the browser?
Nothing bad — the conversion keeps running on our servers. Your task list is saved in the browser you started from, so reopen the site in the same browser and the queue indicator picks the task up again.
Do I need to keep my computer on?
No. All processing happens server-side. Just come back within an hour in the same browser to download the result.
How long are finished files stored?
About one hour. After that the file is deleted from our servers automatically and the task disappears from your queue. Download results as soon as they are ready.
Which tools support background mode?
All server-side converters: PDF to Word, Excel, JPG and back, compress, merge, split, EPUB, Markdown, plus batch runs of up to 10 files.
Can I get the result by email?
Yes. Tick “Email me the result” before starting a conversion: smaller files arrive as an attachment, bigger ones as a download link. Perfect for firing off a long job and walking away.
Is background conversion free?
Conversions themselves are free with daily limits. Sending a running task to the background — and the priority queue that comes with it — is part of Convertica Premium.
